WORKING PRINCIPLE: The Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3 NoIR utilizes a back-illuminated, stacked 12-megapixel SONY IMX708 CMOS sensor to capture high-quality images and video. The sensor converts incoming light (including infrared for NoIR variants) into digital signals, producing RAW10 output for maximum image fidelity. The integrated phase detection autofocus (PDAF) enables rapid focusing, while HDR and dynamic defect pixel correction enhance image clarity under challenging lighting conditions. Data is transmitted to Raspberry Pi boards via the 15-pin CSI-2 interface, supporting real-time image capture and processing for embedded vision applications.

MODULE STRUCTURE: The module houses the SONY IMX708 sensor with a built-in autofocus actuator, mounted on a compact PCB measuring 25 × 24 × 11.5 mm (12.4 mm for Wide variants). A 200 mm 15×1 mm FPC ribbon cable connects the module to Raspberry Pi boards. The structure is compact, robust, and designed for easy installation in low-light and infrared-sensitive projects.

PIN CONFIGURATION / INTERFACE CONNECTION: Connects via the 15-pin CSI-2 interface. Two-wire serial communication supports I2C fast-mode and fast-mode plus for sensor control, including the autofocus actuator. Proper cable insertion ensures secure data transfer and reliable operation.

OUTPUT FUNCTION: Produces still images up to 4608 × 2592 pixels (≈12 MP) and supports video recording in 1080p50, 720p100, and 480p120. The NoIR variant omits the IR cut filter to capture infrared light, enabling night vision and enhanced low-light performance.

OPERATING VOLTAGE: Powered through the Raspberry Pi CSI interface; standard Pi voltage requirements apply.

SIGNAL CONDITIONING: The sensor provides HDR support, dynamic defect pixel correction, and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The phase detection autofocus system adjusts lens position via I2C control, while image data is output digitally in RAW10 format for high-fidelity processing.
