WORKING PRINCIPLE: The Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3 integrates a 12-megapixel Sony IMX708 sensor that converts light into digital signals for capturing high-resolution images and video. It features improved low-light sensitivity and high dynamic range (HDR) support, enabling detailed captures in challenging lighting conditions. Powered autofocus allows precise focus adjustment, enhancing image clarity for both stills and video. The module connects via the 15-pin MIPI CSI interface on Raspberry Pi boards, facilitating fast and reliable data transfer for embedded vision and computer vision applications.
MODULE STRUCTURE: The compact module houses the Sony IMX708 sensor with a powered autofocus lens on a small PCB. It is designed for lightweight and portable applications, with dimensions of 25 × 23 × 9 mm and a weight of approximately 3.5 g. The module can be easily installed onto Raspberry Pi boards via the CSI connector.
PIN CONFIGURATION / INTERFACE CONNECTION: Connects through a 15-pin MIPI CSI interface. The ribbon cable must be correctly oriented with metal contacts facing the HDMI port. The camera is enabled via Raspberry Pi software configuration (sudo raspi-config → Interface Options → Camera → Enable).
OUTPUT FUNCTION: Captures 12MP still images and supports video streaming with high dynamic range. Ideal for security surveillance, home automation, time-lapse photography, streaming, and robotics applications.
