WORKING PRINCIPLE: The Raspberry Pi Camera Module V2 integrates a high-resolution 8-megapixel Sony IMX219 image sensor that converts light into digital signals for capturing still images and video. It supports resolutions up to 3280×2464 pixels for photographs and multiple video modes including 1080p30, 720p60, and 640×480p60/90. The camera connects to Raspberry Pi boards via the dedicated MIPI CSI interface, enabling fast data transfer for image processing, streaming, and embedded vision applications.
MODULE STRUCTURE: The compact module houses the Sony IMX219 sensor with a fixed-focus lens on a small PCB. The ribbon cable connects directly to the CSI port on the Raspberry Pi, ensuring a lightweight and easy-to-integrate form factor. Its dimensions (25 × 23 × 9 mm) and low weight (~5 g) make it suitable for portable projects, drones, and small embedded systems.
PIN CONFIGURATION / INTERFACE CONNECTION: Connects via a 15-pin MIPI CSI interface. Ensure the ribbon cable is oriented correctly with the metal contacts facing the HDMI port. The camera must be enabled in the Raspberry Pi configuration menu (sudo raspi-config → Interface Options → Camera → Enable).
OUTPUT FUNCTION: Captures 8MP still images and records HD video in 1080p30, 720p60, and 640×480p60/90 formats. Ideal for surveillance, motion detection, time-lapse photography, webcams, and live streaming applications.
