WORKING PRINCIPLE: The Raspberry Pi 5MP Camera Module is a compact camera sensor that captures still images and video by converting light into digital signals. The 5-megapixel sensor produces high-resolution static images (2592×1944 pixels) and supports video modes up to 1080p30, 720p60, and 640×480p60/90. It interfaces directly with Raspberry Pi via the dedicated MIPI CSI (Camera Serial Interface), enabling high-speed image transfer for processing, machine learning, and surveillance applications.
MODULE STRUCTURE: The module contains a 5MP fixed-focus lens mounted on a small camera board. It connects to Raspberry Pi using a 15-pin ribbon cable, which attaches to the CSI port. The compact, lightweight structure allows integration into portable projects, including drones and embedded vision systems.
PIN CONFIGURATION / INTERFACE CONNECTION: Connects via a 15-pin MIPI CSI interface. The ribbon cable orientation must match the metal contacts to the HDMI port (on Pi 5, orientation may vary). Requires enabling the camera in the Raspberry Pi configuration (sudo raspi-config → Interface Options → Camera → Enable).
OUTPUT FUNCTION: Captures 5MP still images and supports full HD 1080p video recording. Ideal for real-time image processing, machine learning tasks, time-lapse video, and surveillance monitoring.
