WORKING PRINCIPLE: The Official Raspberry Pi AI Camera is built around the SONY IMX500 intelligent vision sensor, which integrates image sensing and on-device AI processing. The sensor captures light and converts it into digital image data while simultaneously running neural network inference using its built-in low-power AI engine. Pre-loaded models such as MobileNet enable real-time object detection and classification directly on the camera, reducing the computational load on the Raspberry Pi. Data is transmitted via the CSI interface for further processing or display.
MODULE STRUCTURE: The module consists of a 12MP SONY IMX500 CMOS sensor integrated with an onboard AI inference engine and a manually adjustable focus lens. It includes a compact PCB design with a 200 mm ribbon cable for easy connection to Raspberry Pi boards. The structure is optimized for edge AI applications, combining imaging and processing in a single unit.
PIN CONFIGURATION / INTERFACE CONNECTION: The camera connects through the 15-pin CSI interface of Raspberry Pi boards. It uses standard camera interfacing protocols and supports integration with Raspberry Pi software libraries. The ribbon cable ensures stable high-speed data communication between the camera and the processor.
OUTPUT FUNCTION: Captures high-resolution images up to 12MP (4056 × 3040) and supports real-time AI-based outputs such as object detection and image classification. Video output supports 2028 × 1520 at 30 fps (binned mode) and full resolution at 10 fps.
OPERATING VOLTAGE: Powered via the Raspberry Pi CSI interface, operating under standard Raspberry Pi voltage conditions.
SIGNAL CONDITIONING: The module features an onboard AI inference engine for executing neural networks with minimal power consumption. It supports HDR imaging, efficient data handling, and real-time preprocessing. The integration with AI frameworks allows deployment of custom and pre-trained models directly on the sensor.
