MAX30100 Pulse Oximeter Sensor
SENSING PRINCIPLE: Measures heart rate and blood oxygen saturation (SpO₂) by emitting red and infrared light through the fingertip and detecting the light absorbance changes caused by pulsing blood.
SENSOR STRUCTURE: Combines optical LEDs (red and IR), a photodetector, ambient light cancellation, 16-bit sigma-delta ADC, and discrete-time filtering in a compact integrated module.
PIN CONFIGURATION: VIN (Power supply 3.3V–5V), SCL (I2C Clock Line), SDA (I2C Data Line), INT (Interrupt), IRD (Activates IR LED for heart rate and SpO₂), RD (Activates Red LED for SpO₂), GND (Ground)
ELECTRODE CONNECTION: Fingertip placement is recommended for optimal optical measurement using the built-in LEDs and photodetector.
OUTPUT SIGNAL: Digital output via I2C interface; includes 16-depth FIFO buffer for reliable heart rate and SpO₂ data streaming.
OPERATING VOLTAGE: Operates from 1.8V to 5.5V DC; software-controlled shutdown allows ultra-low standby current (0.7 µA).
SIGNAL CONDITIONING: Built-in amplification, ambient light cancellation, and filtering reduce motion artifacts and noise, providing high signal-to-noise ratio for accurate readings.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: Compact green module, 19 × 14.5 × 3 mm, lightweight at 2 g; fully integrated with LEDs, photodetector, and analogue front-end.
APPLICATION SCOPE: Ideal for wearable devices, fitness trackers, biomedical monitoring, DIY health tech, real-time heart rate and SpO₂ tracking, and battery-powered health applications.
