LED Combo
WORKING PRINCIPLE: A Light Emitting Diode (LED) works on the principle of electroluminescence. It is a semiconductor device made from a p–n junction. When a forward voltage is applied across the LED, electrons from the n-type region move toward the p-type region and recombine with holes. During this recombination process, energy is released in the form of photons, producing visible light. The color of the emitted light depends on the semiconductor material used in the LED.
MODULE STRUCTURE: The LED combo kit contains multiple 5mm through-hole LEDs in different colors. Each LED is enclosed in a transparent or diffused epoxy lens that protects the semiconductor chip and helps distribute light evenly. The LEDs are provided in a compact plastic storage box for safe handling and easy organization during experiments and prototyping.
PIN CONFIGURATION: An LED has two terminals. Anode (+) – Positive terminal. Cathode (−) – Negative terminal. The longer lead usually indicates the anode, while the shorter lead represents the cathode. Inside the LED, the larger metal plate also identifies the cathode.
INTERFACE CONNECTION: LEDs are simple output devices that can be connected directly to digital output pins of microcontrollers such as Arduino, ESP boards, STM32, or Raspberry Pi using a current-limiting resistor. They are commonly used to indicate system status, signals, or visual alerts in electronic circuits.
OUTPUT DISPLAY: Each LED produces visible light in a specific color when current flows through it. The combo kit typically includes multiple colors such as red, green, blue, yellow, and white, allowing different visual indications in electronic projects.
OPERATING VOLTAGE: Typical forward voltage varies depending on the LED color: White / Blue: approximately 2.8V – 3.0V, Red / Green / Yellow: approximately 1.8V – 2.0V
SIGNAL CONDITIONING: A current-limiting resistor is usually connected in series with the LED to maintain safe operating current levels. This ensures stable brightness and prevents excessive current that may damage the LED.
