I2C Interface Adapter
DISPLAY PRINCIPLE:
The I2C LCD Interface Adapter allows character LCD modules to communicate using the I2C serial communication protocol instead of the traditional parallel interface. It converts serial data from a microcontroller into parallel signals required by the LCD using the PCF8574 I/O expander chip. This significantly reduces the number of microcontroller pins needed for LCD communication.MODULE STRUCTURE: The adapter board is designed as a compact daughter module that mounts directly on the back of standard LCD displays. It includes the PCF8574 I2C controller chip, a contrast adjustment potentiometer, and a jumper for backlight control. The board provides four connection pins for I2C communication and power supply.
PIN CONFIGURATION: GND – Ground connection, VCC – 5V power supply input, SDA – I2C serial data line, SCL – I2C serial clock line
INTERFACE CONNECTION: The module communicates through the I2C protocol, allowing connection to Arduino, Raspberry Pi, STM32, ESP boards, and other microcontrollers using only two signal lines (SDA and SCL). The default I2C address is usually 0x3F, which can be changed using solder jumpers on the board if multiple displays are used on the same bus.
OUTPUT DISPLAY: When attached to an LCD module, it enables the display to show alphanumeric characters, sensor readings, system messages, menus, and numerical data with minimal wiring and simplified programming.
OPERATING VOLTAGE: The adapter operates with a 5V DC power supply and is designed to work directly with standard 5V LCD modules.
SIGNAL CONDITIONING: A built-in potentiometer on the board allows easy adjustment of LCD contrast. A jumper pin is also provided to enable or disable the LED backlight depending on the project requirement.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: Controller IC: PCF8574 I2C I/O Expander, PCB Size: Approximately 42 × 20 mm, Weight: Around 4 g, Compact PCB design for direct mounting on LCD modules
APPLICATION SCOPE: Widely used in Arduino and embedded system projects where reducing wiring and I/O pin usage is important. Common applications include robotics displays, automation systems, IoT devices, sensor monitoring systems, educational electronics projects, and compact embedded interfaces that require simple text output.
