20x4 LCD Module
DISPLAY PRINCIPLE: The 20×4 LCD display operates using liquid crystal technology to present characters arranged in four rows with twenty characters in each row. It works through a parallel communication system controlled by the HD44780 controller, allowing microcontrollers to send commands and character data for display.
MODULE STRUCTURE: The module consists of a 20×4 character LCD panel with a bright green LED backlight and dark characters that provide high contrast for easy readability. It includes an integrated LED backlight and standard header pins that allow simple connection to breadboards and microcontroller development boards.
PIN CONFIGURATION: VSS – Ground (0V), VDD – Logic supply voltage (5V), VO – LCD contrast adjustment input, RS – Register select for choosing data or instruction register, R/W – Read or write operation selection, E – Enable signal for data transfer, DB0 – DB7 – Data bus lines used for parallel communication, A – LED backlight positive terminal, K – LED backlight negative terminal
INTERFACE CONNECTION: The module uses a standard HD44780-compatible parallel interface. It can be connected directly to Arduino, STM32, Raspberry Pi, and other microcontrollers. The display can operate in both 4-bit and 8-bit communication modes depending on the available GPIO pins.
OUTPUT DISPLAY: The screen can display 20 characters per line across 4 rows.
OPERATING VOLTAGE: The display operates with a 5V DC power supply. The LED backlight is powered from the same supply and provides enhanced visibility in low-light conditions.
SIGNAL CONDITIONING: The contrast of the LCD can be adjusted through the VO pin using a potentiometer. This allows the display clarity to be optimized for different lighting environments.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: Display Format: 20 Characters × 4 Lines, Display Type: Alphanumeric LCD Module, Character Color: Black, Backlight Color: Green, Approximate Dimensions: 5 × 4 × 2 cm, Weight: Around 50 g
APPLICATION SCOPE: Commonly used in Arduino and embedded system projects for displaying information such as sensor data, menus, device status, and measurement results. It is widely used in automation systems, robotics, IoT devices, monitoring equipment, educational electronics kits, and microcontroller development applications.
